Evaluation Part One

Our brief was to create either a music video or a children’s television drama. Initially I had chosen to do make an opening sequence of a children's television drama but I had a problem because no one else was doing a children’s television drama, so I decided to pair up with Anisha and her decision was to make a music video.

The brief for the music video was to create a music video for a company called SSP records. Our job allowed us to manage the promotion of one of their new acts, we also had to concentrate on creating one music video package including a DVD or CD cover for the digipak and an A4 magazine advertisement promoting the DVD package.

After quite a bit of research we decided to use a song from an amateur artist called Faraz Khan A.K.A ‘Kaution’ in the amateur music industry. Anisha found this artist through some of her friends and decided to use his song called ‘Waiting for You’ after hearing it on YouTube, we thought choosing this song was a good decision, we already had an idea on what we do if we used the song.

We got Kaution’s permission by asking him through the social networking site called ‘Facebook’ and thankfully he replied and gave us permission to use his song for our music video without any sort of hesitation or any doubts.

Filming and Editing begins..

Anisha and I decided to try out a range of shots and choose what went best for the starting point of our music video. Although we may be making many changes shortly, this is a rough draft of the first part of editing we did.

During/After Halfterm

During the half term, Anisha went out with the camera and some member's of our music video and began to film some of the key shots. Anisha managed to film the first five shots which take up 20 seconds of the music video. I also got some key images and pictures that we will use for our digipak during the filming.

This week we will concentrate on getting together almost every shot if possible. We are hoping that if we have atleast 3 out of the 4 minutes filmed with a large range of shots, we can then work on editing during next week and put together as much of it as possible.

We also plan on getting together as many images for the digipak and the magazine advertisement as possible. These will just be taken during filming because the audience can then see the resembalance between the digipak's and the the music video.

Overall, we plan to have nearly every shot by the end of this week allowing us to have the shots ready by next week. This also means that we can then concentrate of editing the movie and seeing if we need to re-film any of the shots.

Focus Group

In our focus group, We created a slide show asking a variety of questions, which we then printed out and gave to our participants. We selected two boys and two girls of a teenage age group. This allowed to reach our target audience specifically, letting us receive a variety of great answers and ideas. We found out that music video's based on love are very reachable to our target audience however we were also told that no music video based on love actually shows love for what it really is. They felt that there were too many stereotypical views on teenagers in love, as most videos usually represent their theme through money, clothes, cars or any other type of synergy. We also got a range of ideas of what would be expected to be seen in a music video based on love. Christiana (on the far left) told us that she believed R'n'B videos of today don't show a true reflection of life, so we agreed that we must be careful as to how we represent our theme as we don't want it to be remain love in a stereotypical view.

The Selected Song And Lyrics

Lyrics:

I will be here waiting until the end, you can tell me anything ‘coz I can be your friend

Never let nobody come between us, we can get away and live a good 2010

The hurt and the pain never ends, but I can make it straight whenever it bends

I like the way nothing to you offends, your amazing, I never want you to pretend

I mean it with a hand on a heart, I will always be your man from the start

Whenever you’re in need, I will never be far, but I’d rather be together and forever see you

You gotta be somebody to be hated, I want you to be mine you’re my favourite

I can smell love like a fragrance, you’re the only one I need, babe it’s a statement

Wherever you go, whatever you do, I will be right here waiting for you; Whatever it takes, or how my heart breaks, I will be right here waiting for you... (CHORUS)

Life is a risk and I gotta take it, a girl’s heart is like glass, never break it

Never care about what they think, be true to yourself and I promise you we’ll make it

You’re the reason I breathe, babe I mean it, no one can ever see ‘coz I feel it

If you ever need me I will be there, just come and see me, ‘coz I will be waiting

I promise I will never let your heart break, I will never do what I can’t take

By your side, I will be there to the last day, Let me know when you’re ready, I will meet you halfway

You gotta be somebody to be hated, I want you to be mine, you’re my favourite

I can smell love like a fragrance, you’re the only one I want, babe it’s a statement

(CHORUS)

Love is true, you are my evidence, inside your heart is my residence

Anybody but I is irrelevant, you are the flame to my experiment

Words can’t describe the way you look, No way I’d live if you were took (you better know that!)

Never leave the one you love for the one you like ‘coz the one you like will leave you for the one they love

It’s real talk, and I do believe it, I wanna pass life graduate achieve it

I don’t wanna be living without you, Ima be around you, guaranteed I wouldn’t leave it

You gotta be somebody to be hated, I want you to be mine you’re my favourite

I can smell love like a fragrance, you’re the only one I want babe, it’s a statement

Hadouken and Gallows Comparison

How does the band's typography and visual appearance differ?

As you can probably tell both of the colour schemes are exactly the same, and both bands target audiences are the same. Hadouken allows their fans to create their own colour schemes on their logo making them more involved in their band, as gallows logo could be used as like a tattoo and also isnt as customisable as Hadoukens logo.

How does the band's merchandising differ?

It looks like Gallows are mainly targeting an American audience you can tell this by looking at their website, they are selling clothing such as caps and hoodies etc which are only available in the United States. But with Hadouken they are selling much more items than Gallows they are selling items such as keyrings. This shows that Hadouken are more passionate for pleasing their fans.

How do these differences increase their appeal to their differing niche audiences?

Gallows have many tattoo style designs in their merchandises which appeals to the niche audience who like tattoos. If fans start copying Gallows tattoos this would make the fans feel more involved with the band. Hadouken sells white merchandise, this is so that their fans can make their own designs on the tshirt and can do anything they want on them, here Hadouken allows their fans to be creative.

Audience Profile For Hadouken And Gallows

Hadouken

Age: I think that the age of the target audience is 11-22 this is because Hadouken is a band with young members.

Gender: Because all of the members of Hadouken are males, the target audience will also be males.

Ethnicity: White because the members of the band are white.

Fashion: Skinny jeans

Hobbies and Interests: I think people that are into partying and skate boarding.

Current Media Consumption: Music genres such as Indie and Rock. Also TV programmes such as Skins.

Location: London, due to slang being used, cockney.

Branding

Why are music videos increasingly important when promoting an artist?

Thanks to new media technology, music videos have now evolved as the videos these days give the audience of the music video an idea of the band. This could be the bands hobbies and interests and how their life is. This would influence audiences to listen to more of a bands music, which then after creates bigger revenues for the musical bands.

What are the three types of music video?

The first type of music video is performance, this is a video that captures a live performance of a band or artist, showing the excitement of a live event. The second type of music video is narrative this is where a story is shown throughout the music video which is matched with the lyrics of the music and lyrics. The third type of music video is conceptual this uses visuals that are appropriate to the tempo of the song. The idea comes from directors and does not have to relate to the song.

Why is branding a band or artist especially important when marketing towards niche subcultures?

Niche subcultures are groups of people who are very specific and require a different interest than majority of people. In order for this to work the band/artists need to be unique which would me infuencial then the number of fans will increase. Without branding it would be impossible for people to found out about a band/artist.

How does branding 'from within the band' increase the appeal to a niche, subculture based audience?

As they are a niche audience they want to feel important to the band, this is were brading with in the band takes place. This will help the band/artist form their identity and become unique.
